How I First Became Interested in Photography

From absolutely zero experience in photography to where I am today as a photographer… When I was a young boy I was always fascinated about how things worked and would often take things apart to see what they looked like inside. I did this with everything from mechanical clocks to old electric appliances, and there were times when I got in trouble for doing so, because some items worked well when I took them apart, but not so much when I had spare parts left over when I put them back together. But that was early on in my trial and error of being a mad scientist and as time moved on, I got better and better at this, making very few mistakes and those that I did make, I went back and fixed fairly quickly.

I decided to create a new website, and based on some of the feedback I have received on Facebook and from individual friends, I will also be setting up an eStore where people will be able to purchase both high quality Fine Art Float Mount prints, as well as gift items such as coffee mugs, t-shirts, ball caps, cell phone cases, and other small items with select photos on them.  And once a year I will also be offering calendars for sale.

Out of nineteen Owls that live throughout North America, twelve of these have been found to live part time, full time or accidentally in Manitoba.  Of those that live in Manitoba, eight can be found here year round and four of these are only found in our Province during the Spring, Summer and the Fall.  Of these four owls, the Barn Owl (Tyto alba) is an accidental visitor to Manitoba, normally blown in by strong southerly winds, and does not stay or nest in our Province.  The other three owls that reside in Manitoba during the Spring, Summer and Fall are the Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia), the Long-Eared Owl (Asio otus) and the Short-Eared Owl (Asio flammeus).

I was thinking about all the trips I’ve made back and forth across Manitoba, mostly in the southern part of the Province, looking for wildlife and nature, and started thinking about the different photographs I’ve taken both on the journey and home again.  If I go back as far as 2007, when I got my first DSLR and started counting the number of trips I’ve made, both weekend and weekday trips near and far, I think I have come close to that thousand journey mark.

What is so special about the Great Gray Owl and how did it become the Province of Manitoba (Canada) Provincial Bird?  One of the most sought after birds in North America, ranking 6th among 50 most wanted birds, the Great Gray Owl has been seen in larger numbers in Manitoba than many other places in Canada.
